Milas Olive Oil (PDO): Türkiye's First EU-Protected Extra Virgin
Milas olive oil is an extra virgin olive oil pressed from Memecik olives grown in Milas, Muğla, on Türkiye's southern Aegean coast. In December 2020 it became the first Turkish olive oil registered as an EU Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) — a seal that legally guarantees its region, olive variety and production method.

Milas olive oil is an extra virgin olive oil pressed from Memecik olives grown around Milas, a district of Muğla on Türkiye's southern Aegean coast. In December 2020, "Milas Zeytinyağı" became the first Turkish olive oil entered in the EU register of Protected Designations of Origin (PDO). That seal legally ties the oil to one place, one olive variety and one documented production method — the same class of protection that Greece's Kalamata or Italy's Terra d'Otranto oils carry. This page explains what the certification guarantees, and why this quiet corner of ancient Caria produces oil worth seeking out.
What the EU PDO actually guarantees
PDO — Protected Designation of Origin — is the EU's strictest origin label for food. Milas Zeytinyağı was registered by Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2020/2194 of 16 December 2020, under the same legal framework (Regulation No 1151/2012) that governs every European PDO. In practice, the registration fixes three things:
- Geography: the olives must be grown, and the oil produced, within the defined Milas area of Muğla.
- Variety: the oil is pressed from the Memecik olive, the cultivar that dominates local groves.
- Method: harvesting, pressing and storage follow the registered specification, keeping the oil's character consistent from year to year.
An oil sold under the Milas name cannot legally be anonymous bulk oil blended elsewhere. For buyers, that is the point: PDO is independent, enforceable proof of origin — not marketing copy.
Olive country since ancient Caria
Milas is one of the Mediterranean's oldest continuously farmed olive landscapes. The modern town stands on Mylasa, a principal city of ancient Caria, and a paved sacred road once linked it to the hilltop sanctuary of Labraunda. Olive oil was a staple of daily life here through Carian, Greek, Roman and Ottoman centuries — food, lamp fuel, medicine and soap all came from the same tree. What survives today is not a plantation economy but a patchwork of terraced hillsides and family groves, many with trees far older than the people picking them. When the EU registered Milas Zeytinyağı, it was recognising this continuity: a place where one variety has been grown, pressed and traded in the same valleys for millennia. Memecik: the olive behind the name
The Memecik olive is the signature variety of Türkiye's southern Aegean, and Milas is its heartland. Pressed early, it gives a green-gold oil with aromas of fresh-cut grass, green almond and artichoke, a clear bitterness and a peppery catch in the throat. That bitterness is a quality marker, not a fault: it reflects phenolic compounds such as oleocanthal and oleacein, and peer-reviewed comparisons of Turkish varieties consistently score Memecik oils highly for fruitiness, bitterness and pungency. Harvested later, the same olive turns softer and more buttery — which is why the harvest date on a label matters as much as the variety. If you want the full profile, look for early-harvest bottlings; our guide to Memecik olive oil covers the variety in more depth.
Four generations in the same groves
Milasso works with a single farming family in Milas that has grown olives for four generations. That closeness shows in decisions no bulk buyer would make. The olives are harvested early, while still green, and pressed the same day — oxidation begins within hours of picking, so waiting is the cheapest way to ruin a great crop. The fruit is cold-pressed in a closed system, untouched by hand, and the oil is stored isolated from light and oxygen until bottling. Early harvest costs real money: the same trees give noticeably less oil in October than they would in December. The reward is measurable. Every Milasso lot is laboratory analysed, with free acidity at or below 0.3%, polyphenols above 350 mg/kg and a peroxide value of 10 or less — figures published with the product, not kept in a drawer.
Next to Greek, Italian and Spanish oils
Türkiye is among the world's largest olive oil producers, yet its name recognition abroad lags far behind Greece, Italy or Spain. The main reason is historical: for decades, much of the Turkish harvest was exported in bulk and bottled under other countries' labels. The oil travelled; the credit did not. That is changing. Estate-bottled Turkish oils — many from Memecik and Ayvalık groves — now take medals at major international competitions, and Milas holds the same class of EU certification as Europe's celebrated appellations. The southern Aegean climate that ripens Koroneiki olives across the water in Greece is the climate of Milas too. Judged on what is in the bottle — variety character, freshness, phenolic content — a well-made Turkish olive oil belongs in the same conversation, usually at a fairer price.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What is Milas olive oil?
- Milas olive oil is an extra virgin olive oil made from Memecik olives grown in the Milas district of Muğla, on Türkiye's southern Aegean coast. Since December 2020 the name "Milas Zeytinyağı" has been a Protected Designation of Origin in the EU, meaning the olives must be grown and the oil produced within the defined area, following a registered specification.
- What does PDO mean on olive oil?
- PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) is the EU's strictest origin certification for food. It legally binds a product's name to a defined region, a specified olive variety and a documented production method. An oil labelled with a PDO name such as Milas Zeytinyağı must be produced entirely within that area to that specification — blended or imported bulk oil cannot use the name.
- Is Milas olive oil the first Turkish PDO olive oil?
- Yes. Milas Zeytinyağı entered the EU register on 16 December 2020 through Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2020/2194, making it the first olive oil from Türkiye to earn PDO status. Milas later became the first Turkish district with two EU-registered products, when the Milas Yağlı Zeytini table olive was registered in 2023.
- What does Milas olive oil taste like?
- Early-harvest Milas oil from Memecik olives is medium to robust: fresh-cut grass, green almond and artichoke aromas, a clear bitterness and a peppery finish. The bitterness and pungency come from phenolic compounds such as oleocanthal and are considered positive quality attributes in professional tasting. Later harvests from the same groves taste milder and more buttery.
- Where can you buy authentic Milas olive oil?
- Buy from a named producer in the Milas region and look for a recent harvest date, the Memecik variety and a published laboratory analysis. Milasso sells single-family, early-harvest Milas oil with lab-verified values — acidity at or below 0.3% and polyphenols above 350 mg/kg — and currently ships within Türkiye, with free delivery on orders over 1,000 TL.
